Jack Murtha Death

ƞubat 9th, 2010

Pennsylvania Rep. John C. Murtha, died today of complications relating to a gallbladder surgery. He was 77.

A decorated Vietnam War hero, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi credited Murtha — who was her first choice for majority leader — with helping to turn public opinion against the war in Iraq after he announced his opposition to the war in 2005. Murtha had voted to send troops to Iraq in 2002 but over the years changed his mind after no weapons of mass destruction were found and questions emerged about the intelligence leading up to the war. “The American public is way ahead of us,” Murtha wrote in November 2005 as he was sponsoring a resolution asking President Bush to set a timeline of withdrawal of troops from Iraq. “The United States and coalition troops have done all they can in Iraq, but it is time for a change in direction.”

Murtha “understood the misery of war,” said Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey in a statement on Murtha’s passing. “Every person who serves in the military has lost an advocate and a good friend today.”

Murtha was born in 1932 in New Martinsville, West Virginia, near the Pennsylvania border to an Irish American family. The Eagle Scout left William and Jefferson College to enlist in the Marines, becoming a drill sergeant at the Marine’s training facility on Parris Island before he was selected as an officer. He left the Marines in 1995, enlisting in the reserves, only to raise his hand for the Vietnam War in 1966-67, winning a Bronze Star, two Purple Hearts and the Vietnamese Cross for Gallantry.

In 1969 he became the first Vietnam veteran elected to Congress. Over the years he weathered several tough reelection challenges exacerbated by scandal, in particular, the 1980 FBI Abscam investigation during which he told a person he believe to be a Saudi national looking to bribe his way through the U.S. immigration process with $50,000, “I’m not interested
at this point. [If] we do business for a while, maybe I’ll be interested, maybe I won’t.”

As chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, Murtha presided over hundreds of billions of dollars annually in Pentagon spending, much of it secret. The position led to several accusations of corruption over the years as military projects multiplied in Murtha’s home district in westernPennsylvania . He was accused by several watchdog groups of being amongst the most corrupt members of Congress, though the charges have never stuck. Opening night at the Johnstown Opera, Murtha’s wife’s favorite charity, was considered a must-attend for defense contractors from around the country. In fact, Murtha and six other members of his subcommittee were under investigation by the House Ethics Committee at the time of his death.

Murtha became a mentor and close friend to Pelosi after her election to Congress in 1987. He ran her successful campaign for the House Whip and she endorsed him to be her No. 2 in command in 2006 when she was elected Speaker, but Democratic members pick Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer over Murtha.

Coming from Pennsylvania’s coal and steel country, Murtha was a strong union supporter, though he was socially conservative: he was pro-life and pro-gun. He accused his own constituents, located in an area ofPennsylvania often dubbed Alabama for its cultural conservatism as opposed to the rest of the blue-trending state, of racism for refusing to vote for Barack Obama the 2008 campaign. He later apologized.

Murtha was also known for bluntly speaking his mind. Days after his failed bid for majority leader, Murtha infamously called “total crap” Pelosi’s pledge to pursue lobbying reform in an ethics bills. He is survived by his wife Joyce, their three children and several grandchildren.

I Feel Like You’re Slipping Right Through My Fingers

ƞubat 9th, 2010

Remember last week’s post? Yeah, neither do I. I’m not sure if it was just a really boring episode or I’m running out of 80s actors. Jenny lost 59% of her readership after last week. I apologize you had to read that. I mailed it in. It’s what Nicholas Cage has been doing for the past 12 years. “Oh, what’s this? The Conbobulator Man? Do I get to freak out before a fight scene? No, I don’t need to read the script. Two mil sounds good. I’m in.”

Jake is on his four hometown dates this week. If this is anything like the past 32 seasons, I’m guessing they will involve tours of the city, really awkward dinner conversations with family members, and at least one parent that rivals Michelle in pure nuttiness.

Jake begins with Gia in New York. After the TOUR, they meet Gia’s family. The stepbrother and father are the highlight here.

The dad looks like a burned-out Steven Seagal and speaks in one word sentences.

The stepbrother won’t shut up and looks like the Farkus from a Christmas Story. He has yellow eyes. The night ends with Jake beating him up on the playground.

Williamstown, MA – home of Matthew Perry, water buffalo, and Ali from the Bachelor. Let’s start things out on a romantic note. Let’s walk through the dead grandma’s house. We click info on the remote to see if we accidentally recorded Ghost Hunters.

Have you seen Ghost Hunters? It’s totally awesome and by awesome I mean sweet. Grown men walking around houses saying they feel a presence. And they have a team of like 34 people and vans of equipment! Why?! Why do you need a team? Where is Winston?

No matter what way you cut this house tour, it’s weird.

Dinner with the family is pretty exciting. You should watch it. Trust me.

Jake later meets Tenley in Newberg, Oregon. The town was incorporated as a city in 1889 (most exciting fact I could find).

Not sure if you know this but interpretive dance is a great way to showcase your affections. That’s how I got Jenny. Tenley is pretty good at it.

After dancing, we have crying and lots of it. This family has been through a lot.

Amazing side note – Jake says his passion is aviation. Not flying
aviation. Right.

Moving on we get to Vienna’s hometown somewhere in Florida. Not worth rewinding to get the city.

A boat ride tour includes alligators and Jake abruptly mentioning Vienna’s divorce. Huh? New information!

Later we learn her dad Vincent is the boss and I don’t mean Bruce. Vienna is a princess. She needs to be treated good…not well! She was born to run. His proverbial foot is down. After 3 minutes, he has a “pretty good feeling” about Jake.

Back at the hotel while Jake is getting ready, Ali makes a surprise appearance. These are never good. Last time we had one of these, Jake was talking crap about a country singer and crying over balconies.

Ali tells Jake she needs to choose between her job and Jake. It’s obvious here that she is gone. The tears are half-hearted.

The rose ceremony confirms it. Even Chris Harrison can’t help and he’s half magician. Wow! He was part robot when he interrupted Cryfest 2010! Totally straight-faced. No emotion. “Ali, have you made your decision?” His mind is a neural net processor, a learning computer.

Ali leaves three hours later. Jake struggles with the car door shutting. Not smooth dude. Just shut the door. Man! It’s easy. I’m upset.

Cooley High

ƞubat 9th, 2010

I was about 5 years old when the movie Cooley High premiered at the movie theaters. My parents hadn’t gotten around to taking me to see it. Some folks say jokingly that we were living it. I think the first time I saw Cooley High it was an after school special. Cooley High is one of the funniest, sweetest, heart wrenching, uplifting yet tragic movies I have ever seen. ‘Til this day it remains one of my favorites. Eddie Murphy’s ‘Life’,’ Robert Townsend’s, ‘The Five Heartbeats,’ A Soldier’s Story, Lady Sings The Blues and Quick Change are my all time favorites too.
An excellent movie like Cooley High is made when the writer knows the intricacies of the characters that he is writing about. A Candy Man, and Candy Man II: Farewell To The Flesh is made when a writer doesn’t know his element or subjects. But I give them credit at least they showed some interest in Cabrini Green. It’s all good. I didn’t see “Hard Ball’ or ‘There Are No Children Here’ so I can’t speak on them. But as you can see, long after Cabrini is dead and gone Bollywood and Hollywood will continue to show some interest in it.
The recent murder of honor student Derrion Albert of Fenger High school in September of ‘09 makes me think of Cooley High. Personally, I think that kids from the ‘burbs and beyond should be required to watch ‘Cooley High’ as a teaching tool. I think it would show them that when you have ambitions and goals and people who care about you that you can do anything with your life. And that you have to have respect for everyone’s life. But by the same token, a life can be taken in a fleeting moment when someone has lost their way. Who knows, the massacre at Columbine may not have occurred if the perpetrators would have looked past their realm of depression and hopelessness and saw that other people less fortunate or more fortunate then them had plans for their lives and had people who loved them. That message is universal. From Africa to Attica, a life is precious. You’ve got folks putting in 11th hour appeals for their lives even when they hear the Executioner’s song. Here we are as free as birds creating mayhem and murder in the streets for our children to walk through.
My favorite scene in Cooley High is when the teacher, Mr. Mason played by Garrett Morris walks into the men’s room and spots Preach played by Glynn Turman and asks him what he wants to do with his life. Preach replies, ‘I want to live forever.’ Then Mr. Mason is through with Preach because we all know that no one can be 12 forever and no can live forever. But we know Preach is just like any other red blooded American teen he just wanted to get back to his friends.
Though there are many poignant scenes in Cooley High there is one scene that took me years to watch and even some 30 odd years later I still leave the room when Cochise meets his untimely demise. Friends have told me that it is just a movie but I say to them that too many times art has imitated life and though mothers like Derrion Albert’s and Ben Wilson’s family can’t leavethe room and have to go through life feeling like their heart has been ripped out of their chest but they have to keep on living. I applaud city officials, clergy, students, etc. for rallying and coming together to stop the violence. When I saw the footage of what happened to Derrion Albert my heart broke. I was once a Chicago Publc School student now I am the mother of 3 of those that attend Chicago Public Schools. I don’t have an answer to stopping the violence all I can control are the bodies in my household and I can pray. But I also know that when people don’t know their history they are doomed to repeat it. People may say that watching movies like Cooley High may not open up a dialogue but it may incite violence I say, thus far no one has come up with a solution and like I always tell my children when they are looking for something that they have lost, ’stop looking in the same place because what you are looking for obviously isn’t there, you need to broaden your horizons.’  In closing, I will say everyone can’t do “Midnight Basketball’ to stop the violence (although it is a great detterant) we need to teach the kids to become more verbal because as they get older they are going to have to. We can’t stay 12 forever.

Canon announces Canon T2i / 550D

ƞubat 8th, 2010

Canon EOS T2i, a replacement of popular Canon EOS series for beginner digital SLR camera is just announced. It shares the similar body shape of its predecessor Canon T1i, XSi and XS. The only difference lays in subtle re-arrangement of buttons. Canon T2i poised to replace Canon T1i as the most advance digital SLR for Canon. This will also push Canon XSi to the cheapest Canon beginner DSLR for 2010 holiday season.

Canon T2i specs:

  • 18 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor
  • DIGIC 4 processor with ISO 100-6400 (Expansion to 12800)
  • Continuous shooting at 3.7fps
  • Full HD movie recording with manual control and selectable frame rates
  • 7.7cm (3.0”) 3:2 Clear View LCD with 1,040k dots
  • iFCL metering System with 63-zone Dual-layer Metering Sensor
  • Quick Control screen to change shooting settings
  • Exposure compensation +/-5 stops.
  • Select maximum value for Auto ISO
  • External Microphone socket
  • Movie crop function
  • Eye-Fi connected functions compatibility
  • MSRP price: $899 body only, $999 with 18-55mm IS
  • Street price after a couple month : Approx. $850 body only, $950 with lens

Canon T2i has the similar image resolution to Canon advanced camera, EOS 7D, and improving the video recording mode. Now you can attach external microphone and choose variable frame rates for your movie.

Here is what they say in the press release:

The EOS 550D records video in full 1920×1080p HD resolution, allowing photographers to select the frame rate preferred from 30, 25 and 24fps, as well as offering 720p video at 60 and 50fps. The EOS 550D also includes a 3.5mm stereo microphone socket, enabling the use of an external microphone when capturing video.

Photographers can also take manual control over exposure settings, changing the depth of field and degree of motion blur to shoot more creatively. To provide the best possible video quality, highlight tone priority (HTP) can be set independently for movie capture, without changing any still image capture settings. In situations where the subject is further away, the EOS 550D Movie Crop function records with the central 640×480 pixel area of the sensor, creating an effective magnification of approximately seven times. The EOS 550D is the first in the EOS range to feature Movie Crop and gives consumers more flexibility to capture important moments which would otherwise be too far away.

Other than improvement in image resolution and video recording, The T2i is just the same as T1i. Therefore, T1i owners that don’t plan to record creative/artistic video don’t really need to upgrade.

T2i also has a new battery grip that has button to change aperture setting, however, the sad part is if you can’t use old battery grip.

I think that Canon sticks to their principle in launching their best sellers beginner DSLR camera, they don’t change much except the image resolution and video features. T21 is a great tool for creative multimedia artist in budget.

Super Bowl XLIV: Saints vs. Colts

ƞubat 8th, 2010

New Orleans Saints versus Indianapolis Colts – The Super Bowl. The big game. The contest we’ve been waiting weeks for. These two gentlemen in the picture will be battling head-to-head despite never actually stepping on the field of play at the same time while the clock is running.

In case you forgot, The Who preform at halftime. (Set list) The pizza and wings are set up in the middle room and the fridge is full of Heineken and whatever light beer your girlfriend guilted you into purchasing. Enjoy the first half. If anyone is still coherent enough, there will be a post for the second half.

Second Half: Guess what!? I’ve been drinking Heinekens since 4pm, there are less than 200 comments and the server can handle what I’ve been told are thousands of comments on a single post. All that adds up to = keep talking here people. Colts up 10-6 at the half. Not exactly the shootout we were expecting.
